Located in Abu Dhabi, the project will feature a 5.2GW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant and a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) BESS, delivering up to 1GW of baseload power daily. Masdar says this gigascale project reflects the UAE’s ambitions of being a global pioneer in renewable energy deployment.
With its 24/7 operation, a key aim of the project is to help overcome the intermittency challenges commonly associated with renewable energy sources. With the 19GWh battery storage facility seamlessly integrating solar power into the grid, the project will help enhance the overall reliability of the energy supply.
Many of these projects are gigawatt-scale, with the hope that their immense size will quickly bring down the cost of green hydrogen through economies of scale — in the same way that the prices of wind and solar power have fallen exponentially over the past decade.
Battery storage is a rapidly evolving technology and one that will be instrumental in enabling the full-scale expansion of solar and other renewable energy sources across the world. Projects like the Tiln battery demonstrate that it is commercially and practically viable today. So, why is battery energy storage so important?

The storage system runs on electricity (1.24 kWh/kg-H 2) and natural gas; the electricity may come from the renewable generation plant, but is represented as purchased industrial electricity cost in this study. Heat demand is estimated at 11.37 kWh/kg-H 2, while heat rejection is estimated at 6.36 kWh/kg-H 2.
