In an agrivoltaic study, UCLA engineers put a semi-transparent solar roof on a greenhouse, and some unexpected things happened with both the roof and the plants. The researchers at UCLA Samueli School of Engineering designed semi-transparent organic solar panels that can absorb energy from sunlight without blocking the light that the plants need.
Scientists believe that transparent photovoltaic cells will have little effect on plant growth, making them ideal for use in greenhouses. They also present an opportunity to diversify technologies for producing sustainable energy. Greenhouses can become energy-neutral, producing energy equal to energy costs by blocking a limited amount of sunlight.
Semi-transparent photovoltaic modules were developed for greenhouse roof applications. Numerous crystalline-silicon spherical solar microcells were embedded in the modules. Photovoltaic (PV) modules of two types had cell densities of 15.4 and 5.1 cells cm −2. Conversion efficiencies of the PV modules were, respectively, 4.5% and 1.6%.
Conclusions This study examined electrical and shading characteristics of the prototype semi-transparent PV modules, which are intended to provide electrical energy consumed in greenhouses for plant environment control. PV modules of two types have been developed using different patterns of 1.8 mm spherical solar microcells.
