The coil turns in the battery pack

How does a coil pack work?

The coil pack takes voltage from your car’s battery and builds up as much as 50,000 to 70,000 volts which it then transfers to the spark plug via the spark plug cables. The spark then ignites the fuel and air mixture inside of your engine’s cylinders, starting the combustion process.

Why does my car need an ignition coil?

Hence, this is why it needs the ignition coil. The latter takes voltage from your car’s 12V battery and amps up that figure to upwards of 50,000 or as high as 70,000 volts. The coil pack then transmits this high-voltage supply to the spark plugs through a spark plug wire.

How do ignition coils work?

Ignition coils act as a transformer to elevate the spark at the spark plug to between 25,000 and 30,000 volts. Today’s cars almost exclusively use a coil-on-plug design where each cylinder has its own ignition coil. Ignition coils use electromagnetism to multiply an incoming electrical current to a much more powerful current when it leaves.

What happens if a coil pack is bad?

If the coil pack is bad, it can cause the engine to run on one or more cylinders less than normal, and this will cause your engine sound to change. In extreme cases, the car could also backfire. This loud banging noise occurs whenever there’s unburned fuel escaping from the exhaust.

How do I know if my coil pack is bad?

Common symptoms of a failing coil pack include engine stalling, a decrease in fuel efficiency, difficulty starting the car, and illuminated check engine light. When diagnosing coil pack issues, mechanics often use diagnostic techniques such as scanning the vehicle’s onboard computer for error codes related to ignition system malfunctions.

Can a bad coil pack cause a car to stall?

While it is a symptom of a bad coil pack, it can also be the root of most engine malfunctions. If there’s a drop in power when you step on the accelerator, something is wrong that should be dealt with immediately. If you allow the problem to continue, the vehicle may begin to stall. 6.
