A Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) combines an electric motor with a combustion engine. What sets a PHEV apart from a standard hybrid vehicle is it's larger battery which can be charged by plugging into an external power source. This allows PHEVs to drive in electric-only mode for a certain distance, known as the all-electric range.
One that you’ve probably read about is the plug-in hybrid, which we’ll explain more about here. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is a type of car or van that has both a normal engine that uses petrol or diesel fuel and one or more electric motors as well.
Plug-in hybrids typically use larger battery packs than comparable conventional hybrids, however, and thus require more resources. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has suggested that utilities could purchase used batteries for backup and load leveling purposes.
There’s hardly any difference in normal driving between a plug-in hybrid and any other type of car. All are automatic only - there are no manual gearboxes in hybrid cars these days - so they are really easy to drive, and switching between electric and petrol (or diesel) power is seamless and automatic.
