Battery Experiment Principle

What is the take charge global battery experiment?

In the Take charge: global battery experiment learners can explore batteries and the important role they play in a sustainable future by making their own. There are two investigations in this global experiment. Both experiments give learners a chance to build a coin battery and practise scientific enquiry skills.

How were batteries invented?

You might think that batteries are a modern invention, but batteries were one of the first ways of making electricity. Alessandro Volta discovered the first electric battery in 1800. He made a giant stack of alternating layers of zinc, blotting paper soaked in salt water, and silver. This early design for a battery became known as the voltaic pile.

How can KS3 students learn about batteries?

Inspired by this series, investigations involving simple batteries made from items found in the home or school laboratory can help KS3 pupils understand the origin of current, voltage and power, and the chemistry that drives batteries.

How does a lemon battery work?

Batteries contain a negative electrode, a positive electrode and an ion conducting electrolyte that facilitates ion transfer. In the example of a lemon battery setup, the copper metal is the positive terminal, the zinc metal the negative terminal and the juice in the lemons form the electrolyte.

How does a battery work?

The current is made up of a complete loop of electrons which are driven from the negative electrode towards the positive one. For a battery to function, the electrodes need to be made of different materials, usually two dissimilar metals. One will form the positive electrode and the other the negative electrode.

How can I learn more about battery research & development?

Link to literacy with the battery power worksheet (also available in PDF) to find out more about battery research and development from the past to the present day. To take part in investigation 1, each group will need: Understand that batteries are made up of layers of different materials. Understand that batteries store energy.
