In a governmental funded 3-year research project a recycling process for nickel-metal hydride batteries (NiMH) has been developed. Today the discarded batteries are used in the steel industry as a cheap nickel-source. Cobalt is not paid for and rare earths (RE) are slagged and lost for reuse.
The battery shells are nickel-plated iron with high intensity and toughness, and they are put in tight contact with the inner rolls of spent Ni–MH batteries. The battery shells can be experimentally incised with an all-purpose cutter, but it has low efficiency and high operating cost as applied in scale-up recycling processes.
Spent nickel metal hydride batteries usually consist of Ni, Fe, Co and REEs. From the end-of-life products, the recovery rates are found to be very high for base metals such as Al, Cu, Fe and very low for REEs (Haxel et al. 2002 ).
A novel process for the recycling of spent Ni–MH batteries is obtained. Spent Ni–MH batteries were dismantled using a specially designed machine. The battery shells and the iron-punched and copper mesh substrate could be effectively separated from the baked residues with a sieve rather than a magnetic method.
It has been reported that 86% of valuable metals have been recovered by mechanical treatment which includes milling, size separation and magnetic separation. The work of Czerny and Reichel ( 1999) has been patented which is a combination of mechanical and thermal treatment for recovery of metals from spent NiMH batteries.
Since batteries constitute numerous transition and rare earth metals, recycling offers to be a good strategy for reuse as secondary raw material. The different steps adopted in the recycling process are collection of spent batteries, categorization of batteries appropriate for recycling, metal recovery and finally separation of desired products.
