An explosion-proof valve is a critical safety feature in a lithium-ion battery designed to safeguard it against thermal runaway. Usually located on its casing, this valve monitors internal pressure changes before opening to release any built-up pressure within and prevent damage.
Explosion-proof valves keep their inner pressure below a preset threshold, enabling normal battery operation. Should that pressure exceed this limit, however, the explosion-proof valve opens to release any trapped gases within and lower its pressure as quickly as possible, helping protect the battery against rupture or explosion.
This paper addresses the safety concerns associated with LCBPs and proposes an effective solution for explosion relief. Installing an electric-controlled pressure relief valve with battery fault detection capability on a liquid-cooled battery pack can prevent explosions caused by thermal runaway. 1. Introduction
Prismatic lithium-ion batteries in portable electronics typically incorporate an explosion-proof valve at the top of their battery case, designed to open easily in response to increasing internal pressure. When an internal short circuit or overcharging occurs, this reaction could produce heat and gas, generating an explosion if leave unmanaged.
The temperature of the safety valve outlet of battery increased from 40.3 to 215.4 °C. The high temperature inside the battery ignited the electrolyte. Flames erupted from the safety valve outlet of battery, causing the FEGs in the LCBP to explode. The explosion damaged the LCBP casing, deforming the top cover and body.
When the battery fault detection module identified that the battery safety valve was open, the PRV was opened immediately to release FEGs inside the LCBP. The novel PRV’s hardware and software components were developed, along with its integration with the BMS to modify the charging and discharging strategy of battery.
