Solar thermal storage (STS) refers to the accumulation of energy collected by a given solar field for its later use. In the context of this chapter, STS technologies are installed to provide the solar plant with partial or full dispatchability, so that the plant output does not depend strictly in time on the input, i.e., the solar irradiation.
Different technologies to store thermal energy for CSP application (between 200 °C and 1000 °C) are described below. Emphasis is put on recent advances in thermochemical heat storage technology, which is under-developed but has a great potential. 3.1. Sensible heat storage
This article reviews the thermal energy storage (TES) for CSPs and focuses on detailing the latest advancement in materials for TES systems and advanced thermal fluids for high energy conversion efficiency.
